Start.com, and why I love it!
RSS is hot! But to tell you the truth, I didn't know what the hell RSS was good for back in the beginning of 2004. I don't think I was the only one either. However, with the release of Mozilla Firefox 0.9 and Mozilla Thundebird 0.9 (wich both introduced integrated RSS options, being it through the use of the Live Bookmarks in Firefox or the RSS Feed Reader in Thunderbird) I started to realize how handy RSS can be.
Since then I've been trying a lot of things around RSS. Personally I don't really like the Live Bookmarks in Firefox because you still need to open the respective posts in their own sites to read it. The RSS Support in Thunderbird is okay but only lets you read your feeds on your own computer, and adding feeds to it is still a little too much work.
I also tried Lektora, an extension for Firefox. It's a full-fledged, realy neat RSS reader that can be opened in a new tab. You could add any RSS feed you wanted and it even could search the page you're on for RSS feeds with the click of a button. Great huh?
Well, that was until I found out about Start.com. It's one of Microsoft's Incubation experiments (just like MSN Spaces was). It is a small site, actually just a single page, but with some very excelent Javascript that lets you read any RSS feed you want from it. :D
But wait, there's more. All your RSS feeds and settings are stored on their server and you can use a special link to open your page from any other computer, so you have your personal RSS startpage on the go anywhere you want. It's really fast too! Even faster than Lektora.
Start.com is my Startpage now... ;)
